Years of collaboration
2022 – 2024
Context
A leading freelance engineering company
Founded in 2010, Motivo is an end-to-end engineering services provider that helps its customers bring their products to market.
Motivo’s engineering team has a diverse skillset, working across many industries, including AgTech, Mobility, Aerospace, Consumer Electronics, Energy, and Autonomy.
Motivo approached 3di with a new project – helping document a completely bespoke machine for testing turf for the NFL.
Aim
A new product for elite sport
Motivo’s project was a world first – the BEAST (Biomechanical Elite Athlete Shoe-Turf Tester). The BEAST is used by the NFL to gather data on playing surfaces, such as synthetic and natural turf, and give grounds staff, players, and coaches valuable data on how these surfaces affect play.
Using this data, the players, teams, and the NFL can make decisions on how to maintain and improve playing surfaces for optimal performance, and take steps to prevent player injuries.
The BEAST is able to collect and record a wide range of useful data. To ensure that the field maintenance teams were able to get the most from the BEAST, it was important to have clear and precise instructions on how to set up and use the BEAST’s system.

Challenges
A novel product with multiple stakeholders
There were several challenges that the 3di authoring team on this project needed to overcome to produce the clear, accurate documentation required.
Firstly, the team needed to manage a multichannel client relationship. Our in-house technical authoring team had to effectively liaise between stakeholders in the Motivo engineering team and their end users at Motivo’s client.
Secondly, the authoring team needed to make documentation for a completely new and bespoke product. The BEAST was a world first as a mobile turf testing machine. It can run many different turf tests that were previously carried out in labs, now housed in a single, mobile unit. Thirdly, data collected by the BEAST is used to make important decisions around ground maintenance and player safety. It is important that data collected by the BEAST is consistent and accurate. To that end, the documentation had to provide clear and concise instructions on the setup and use of the BEAST machine to ensure the reliability of accurate data collection
Solution
Flexible documentation that meets the needs of all users
The 3di team:
- Drew on the expertise of our technical writers to create an in-house team that could quickly get to grips with this novel product.
- Created documentation that meets the needs of the multiple stakeholders in each organisation, as well as the field management end-users, by setting up regular contact and efficient communication practises.
- Delivered flexible documentation that was easy to update as the product evolved, and was available in multiple outputs.

Result
Delivered clear documentation for a complex, novel product
The 3di team:
- Created and delivered documentation to Motivo in time for the BEAST to be used in preparation for the NFL’s 2023 season and even helping prepare the pitch for Superbowl 2023. You can read more about the BEAST’s usage and impact on the NFL in an ESPN article here.
- Implemented a modular process for developing content so that changes to the BEAST can be quickly and seamlessly added across multiple formats.
- Continue to provide support with updates to the BEAST documentation with our team of in-house technical writers.
