Technical content operations

Ensure your technical content services supports your business strategy

“Content Operations (or ContentOps) is how you create and manage technical content assets related to your products; assets that deliver value for your business by reducing costs and enhancing the customer experience.”

Paul Ballard, 3di CEO

Content Operations has emerged as a way of recognising the strategic value of technical product content. It also acknowledges that expectations have shifted. Companies have seen that it is possible to transform the contribution of functional groups so that they more reliably deliver value. DevOps, ITOps, and DesignOps have led the way. ContentOps is catching up.

Fortunately, 3di has been providing ContentOps capabilities for our customers long before the term was invented. We’ve been providing integrated consultancy, technical authoring, and multi-lingual translation services – focused on technical product content – since we were founded in 2002. As good pragmatists, we’re quite happy to embrace the ContentOps label and now have extensive experience in making ContentOps capability a reality for multiple customers.

3di knows how to deliver these, and many other benefits of establishing a ContentOps capability:

FAQ’s

Who will work on my projects?

The individual 3di authors and translators who work on your content will understand your world, your audience and your priorities. Our internal teams are experts in delivering content operations projects; we’ve done so for over two decades, and for over 300 customers. Our in-house teams cover many diverse roles, meaning we can deliver a wide range of content for our customers, such as designing an award-winning knowledge base for our telecommunications customer, who face very similar issues to designing award-winning API documentation for Unzer. The range of roles we have includes:

  • Technical Writers – each with a technical background, and trained to work consistently but flexibly as part of 3di’s award-winning services.

Do you just provide consultancy, or do you also deliver projects?

We do both. We provide content operations consultancy, but we also have experienced in-house teams that deliver technical writing and localization services. We can ensure that all the elements to create your content, such as your people, processes and tools, are in place. We can do this because we have over 20 years of experience getting the best out of different tools, setting up processes, creating many types of content, and hiring and working with our network of authors.

If needed, we can also provide authoring and localization services as one-off projects, handle projects while providing coaching to your internal teams, or provide extra resources to handle peaks in demand.

Visit our technical writing services and localization services pages to find out more about each service.

What tools do you recommend as part of your content operations consultancy?

As a general rule of thumb, we try to be tool-agnostic. We like using an array of tools, and know that some work better in certain situations than others. We’ll weigh up the strengths and weaknesses of each tool, what you need to achieve as part of your content operations strategy, and the specific requirements you and your end-users have for your content. We also combine industry-leading content tools with our own in-house AI-powered tools to help our team deliver work more efficiently. The tools we use include, but are not limited to:

  • MadCap Flare
  • Framemaker
  • Markdown
  • VS Code
  • XTM Cloud
  • Phrase
  • Git
  • DITA
  • Jira
  • Confluence
  • Azure
  • Sharepoint
  • WordPress
  • Snagit
  • Illustrator
  • Inkscape
  • Acrobat
  • Excel
  • Word

Visit our technology page to find out more about the tools we use and how we combine them with our bespoke in-house technology.

Can you work with my in-house technical writing, localization and content operations teams?

We can work as an extension of your internal teams and can provide tailored support for your specific needs. We can provide consultancy on your overall content strategy, help you overhaul your tools and processes, and place the right people in the right roles. We can also manage one-off projects that require outside expertise, or simply add extra authoring or localization capacity if you are particularly busy. We can seamlessly integrate with your existing team and flex our services as demand peaks and troughs.

Visit our project delivery page to find out more about how we work with your in-house teams.

Do you have the expertise to handle industry-specific technical writing projects?

In short, yes. The slightly longer answer is, our in-house technical writing team have experience in a variety of industries – we’ve handled all manner of projects, including documentation for autonomous robots and automated warehouses, product guides for marine electronic manufacturers, information portals for multi-national telecoms companies, API and developer documentation for software developers, user guides for medical equipment – we’ve even made documentation for very expensive and bespoke pens.

Any gaps in our knowledge can be filled by our extensive network of freelancers, who supplement our in-house technical writing team. We typically have long-standing relationships with our freelancers, some of whom have become members of our in-house team, and some of whom have been working with us since we started in 2002.
